Getting Rid
of Bed Bugs
| What
are Bed Bugs?
Many people
think that bed bugs are simply house dust mites that nest in our
beds. It is true that house dust mites do feed on dead human skin
particles and females lay their eggs in the fibres of some types
of mattress as well as blankets and sheets, but the reality is that
house dust mites will nestle and breed anywhere where there is dead
human skin to be found, yet bed bugs prefer out blood and our pets
blood!

 |
| Bed
bugs are not related to the house dust mite, rather than feeding on
our dead skin flakes and dust, they feed on our blood. A little like
mosquitoes, they pierce the skin with their long beak and suck blood
while we sleep, most of us don't even know we are being bitten. Bed
bugs don't just stick with human blood, just about any pet's blood
will suffice.
What do bed
bugs look like?
They are oval flat shaped insects 5-6mm in length, a reddish brown
colour that changes to a darker brown after a blood feast.

How
do I check for bed bugs?
The first signs of bed bug infestation are tiny bite marks on the
upper parts of your body; they are more likely to appear as itchy
welts whilst some people have little or no indication of any bites.
Check your bedding
for small blood smears and give them a sniff, if you smell something
like sweet almonds, it could indicate a heavy infestation of bed
bugs.

Don't look for the
actual bugs because it is highly unlikely that you will see them in daylight
because during they tend to hide in cracks and crevices, under the buttons
of mattresses and they are not restricted to beds alone.
They are quite happy
living behind skirting boards, and headboards as well as in furniture
and drawers etc, like other things that suck blood, they only come out
at night to feed from us when we are asleep.
